Quick tips for improving scientific writing

Use the active voice.

Instead of:

A recommendation was made by the committee that the study be halted.

Try:

The committee recommended halting the study.

Don’t turn verbs into nouns.

Instead of:

We reported the identification of a new risk factor for cancer.

Try:

We identified a new risk factor for cancer.

Don’t use a long word or phrase when a short one will do.

Instead of:

Physical activity can be regarded as an essential part of a child's life.

Try:

Physical activity is an essential part of a child's life.

Reduce abbreviations and acronyms.

Instead of:

The findings from HICs and LMICs were difficult to interpret.

Try:

The findings from low and middle-income countries were difficult to interpret.
